Maintenance Tips for Afro Kinky Hair

Why is maintenance important?

A lot of the time, when buying hair, people may think that the hair will sustain itself and remain soft without work.

However it is important to remember that the hair is human hair and needs to be maintained.

Taking care of your natural hair afro kinky bundles will..

  • Allow the hair to last longer
  • Improve the look of the hair
  • Maintain the moisture in the hair
  • Avoid clumping of hair (looks like knotted balls)
  • Avoid matting, dryness and tangling

Afro kinky hair is thicker and more soft in texture and the curly afro kinky bundles are more prone to getting tangled.

This can all be avoided with proper maintenance.

However, the best thing about afro kinky and curly hair is that it doesn’t need to be overly manipulated or washed often. That is why it is so popular!

In fact, it’s best to stick with creams and oils that will retain the moisture in the hair.

Detangling the Hair

Wet your hair thoroughly.

When detangling, use your fingers and work your way slowly through the afro kinky bundles while the hair is soaking wet.

Co-Washing or Washing the Hair on a Regular Basis

What is co-washing? “Co-washing” is short for “conditioner-only-washing” hair.

Basically, you skip the shampoo. This popular way of washing hair is great for getting somewhere in between a cleanse and a “second day” hair feel. This is a great process for retaining moisture and not stripping the hair of the natural moisture, while keeping it clean and soft.

Co-washing deep wave, afro kinky bundles and the other natural textures can be done on a weekly basis and sometimes, it can be beneficial to add a mild shampoo, just to get a deeper clean.

This will help remove any dirt, bad smells or air pollutants that could get trapped in the hair.

This timing can change at your discretion depending on the amount of products you use, climate or exposure to chlorine or salt water.

TIP!

When co-washing, stroke the hair from the ends to the roots with either a wide-tooth comb or a Denman brush to avoid tangling the hair extensions. Don’t rub the hair, because this can destroy the quality. Be patient and careful!

Co-washing with a SEW IN

Twist or braid hair into 4 to 6 braids or plaits to avoid tangling the hair. Use a generous amount of moisture rich conditioner and distribute it evenly throughout the hair.

After rinsing the conditioner out thoroughly, undo the twists or braids and allow it to air dry.

Rinsing

Run water through the hair, stroking it downwards with your finger. This will help remove the conditioner. The afro kinky bundles should slip easily through your fingers. If it is still tangled,

Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning the afro kinky weave or afro kinky human hair wigs can be done on a bi-weekly basis. It is important that you use moisture rich deep conditioners that will leave your hair feeling soft and hydrated. We recommend the Shea Moisture  that can be used both on your own natural hair and on the human hair afro kinky bundles.

Styling and Curl Defining

Based on the product you choose, use the recommended amount of curl definer or curl lotion of your choice, then distribute the products throughout your afro hair bundles. Then, let the hair air dry.

Drying

It is highly recommended that you allow the hair to air dry.

If it is not possible, add a diffuser attachment to your hair dryer with the heat at the lowest setting.

FACT!

Using too much heat can result in curls losing their definition.

FOR SEW INS!

If your hair is sew-in, put the hair on top of your head, similar to a pineapple and wrap it in a cotton t-shirt. Allow the hair to dry for about an hour and 30 minutes.

Daily Care

Spritz the hair with conditioner and water mix. If necessary, finger detangle gently.

Bedtime Routine

Secure the afro kinky hair using the pineapple method.

Pineapple Method: Bend your head forward and gather the hair gently. Secure the hair, similar to a pineapple with a scrunchy in a loose ponytail to avoid leaving a dent in the hair.

DO NOT sleep with your hair wet. This WILL cause matting and will leave the hair brittle and hard to manage.

Heat Styling

You can use heat on your extensions such as blow drying, curling or straightening, but REMEMBER that excessive or frequent use of heat can damage the hair and permanently affect the pattern of the hair. This can affect how soft the hair will remain.

Coloring the Hair

The hair will arrive in the color described on the individual product page. Because it is human hair, it can be colored to your liking. We RECOMMEND consulting with a professional hair stylist before coloring or dyeing your hair.

Yes, afro kinky bundles take time to maintain, but they are a popular, stylish and amazing investment in your hair collection. The best part is you can always re-use them by just refreshing them.
